I have truly enjoyed this class. I
found it surprising the bias that people project on to others. I also found it
interesting to determine what bias I projected on to others as well. I was able to look
deeper into my challenge of working with English Language Learners. I hope to
further my knowledge and education on what factors teachers use to determine
that a child needs special education. Providing teachers with proper training
will help them to be more knowledgeable on the different cultures in their class.
My future aspirations are to continue learning more about ELL students, learn
more about stress, trauma and resilience. Teaching resilience in the midst of
trouble helped to motivate me in this profession. Reading several articles of
families that assimilated into the culture and the various resources they need
fuels my passion for working with ELL students and their families. This class
has truly added to who I am as a scholar-practitioner!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts Kara!
ReplyDeleteI was also surprised by the amount of bias that is shared, often without one's knowledge. I also was unaware of some of own biases until I started really thinking about my mindset. Bias is such a influential aspect of our character that we must constantly reflect upon. Each class I enjoy learning more about your topic and I love that you are focusing on educating the teachers. As a classroom teacher, I understand the benefits of trainings such as this and would welcome them with open arms. Great work!

Thank you so much for your response. It truly is important for everyone to first identify the bias they have and begin to eliminate them. As a Therapist it is really nice to know that this truly is a training that teachers will find helpful in working to decrease the number of ELL students that will need special education.
DeleteDear Kara,
ReplyDeleteI truly believe that your challenge is very important and affects so many young children, their families, and teachers around the world. Your future research will help teachers see the positive sides of finding ways to help ELL students. I strongly believe this semester I have really learned to listen more and to really take a look at some of my own biases when it comes to early childhood education. One of the best quotes this semester for me is from Derman-Sparks and Edwards (2010), which states "take time to uncover your own beliefs and biases." Furthermore, when you are aware of your own biases then you are able to create a more anti-bias education for others.

Thank you for your response. I agree completely with that quote and plan to share it with others.
DeleteHello Kara. One of my greatest learnings this semester was on microaggressions. Knowing that I have wronged someone and/or hurt someone without meaning to still bothers me; but, I hope that by learning about microaggressions and biases I will be cognizant of them and not hurt someone. I love your poster above!! Thank you! Cissy
